Canoe/Kayaking Sessions

Have a Go Sessions (BCU paddle sport Start):
(suitable for all ages)

A half day course aimed at providing a very basic introduction to paddle sport. Emphasis is very much on having fun in the boats. A fantastic course for those who have had little or no experience of canoeing or kayaking. These courses are aimed at all ages so why not book in with your children who can get their Paddle Power Start certificate at the same time.

If you would like to take the BCU Kayak 1 Star Award but have never been kayaking and feel like you'd like to experience the sport before taking the award, why not our Have a Go Sessions to get you started.

British Canoeing 1* Course

The One Star is the first British Canoe course, with a national certification for successful candidates. Your One Star will take place on a stunning local river.

These one day courses uses either canoes or kayaks depending on your preference and aim to give you a broad range of skills. We will paddle together and you will be receive excellent coaching in kayak or open canoe. At the end of the day, if you have reached the required standard, you’ll receive your 1 Star Award. It couldn’t be easier!

This 1 day course is designed to teach you all of the basic skills required by the flat water kayaker/Canoeist. This is ideal for those wishing to progress on from our Canoe or Kayaking experience or for those that are wishing to start on the first step of the British Canoe Union’s star award system.

During the one day course we will ensure you gain all the relevant skills and theory needed to get started in this fantastic and diverse sport. We will also give you the knowledge required to pass the BCU assessment (should you wish). You will learn: controlling and paddling the kayak, launching and recovering and capsize techniques, as well as basic theory in kayak and paddling equipment design. In addition to the knowledge and skills needed to pass the assessment, your instructor will provide you with extra tips and techniques along the way to make sure you really get the most from the day!

During the course we will cover:

* Safety awareness
* Equipment selection and set up
* Launching and recovering
* Steering and controlling
* Kayaking theory
* Capsize drills
* Using spray deck
* Journeying

For a BC one star canoe and kayak course you do not need any experience in paddle sports but you will need to be fit enough for a full day’s activity. The course will include a journey in Kayaks, along with a coaching session in Open Canoes

We supply all the equipment you’ll need on the water. In comfortable stable boats your course will cover.

This course will answer lots of the question you’ll have as you get into this fantastic sport, where to go, what to do and what to do if you fall in.
